This is a fun road to drive from East to West. Western Arizona has all
of these huge saguaro cacti. They can be seen pretty much all of the way
to Yuma. When you cross the CA border, the hardship of the fruit
checkpoint is definitely lessened by knowing the eastbound traffic will
be going through an inspection checkpoint. (Ok, I since have found out
it has been closed. But if you didn't know that :) )
It is in California though that this road really shines. After some sand
dunes near the state line, the road settles down into the most boring
stretch of highway ever. Just when you're ready to take any other road
to SD next time, you enter the Cleveland National Forest. All of a
sudden you're driving through dramatic views, sharp curves, steep
inclines, and the like all the way into San Diego. It's the contrast
that makes this one work
