At the western end of I-40 there is a sign giving the distance to the eastern end. I don't know if this one gets stolen as frequently as the one on US 50 in Ocean City, MD that gives the distance to Sacramento, CA
I since have been informed that there is a similar sign in the eastern end.
I got this email:
The signs have just gone up on I-40 in the Raleigh area for a new spur interstate that will open in August: I-540. Actually, this road is just the first several miles of what will ultimately (15 or so years from now) become I-640, a 65-mile long outer beltway around Raleigh, completely encircling the existing I-440 inner beltway. Apparently, the NC DOT decided to demarcate it as a spur (odd prefix) for now, since it won't actually hook back up to I-40 at the far end for many years.
